That is, you take the command we used to run a Student’s t-test and drop the var.equal = TRUE bit. All you have to do is not bother telling R to assume equal variances. Lastly, would will find the t critical value in the t-distribution table that corresponds to a two-tailed test with alpha. Typically we round this value down to the next nearest integer, so the degrees of freedom that we would use in our Welch’s t-test is 18. Each population is either normal or the sample size is large. The effective degrees of freedom turns out to be 18.137. The mathematics and theory are complicated for this case and we intentionally leave out the details. Like the Student test we assume that both samples are drawn from a normal population but the alternative hypothesis no longer requires the two populations to have equal variance. When the assumption of equal variances is not valid, we need to use separate, or unpooled, variances. Figure 13.10: Graphical illustration of the null and alternative hypotheses assumed by the Welch t-test. To perform Welch’s t-test, simply fill in the information below and then click the Calculate button. How To Calculate Degrees of Freedom Let’s move ahead and resolve a couple of examples to clarify the concept in more depth Example 01: How to find degrees of freedom for t Test with data values as 23 Solution: Here we have: N 23. What matters is that you’ll see that the “df” value that pops out of a Welch test tends to be a little bit smaller than the one used for the Student test, and it doesn’t have to be a whole number. For quick and better approximations, start using this best degrees of freedom calculator. However, according to Scheffé H. It doesn’t really matter for out purposes. The Welch-Satterthwaite equation giving approximate degrees of freedom is used when the populations dont have equal variances. This result is obtained by equalizing the moments. … which is all pretty straightforward and obvious, right? Well, perhaps not.

The smaller rectangle and the larger one on Of the area, half of the difference between Yellow, the smaller rectangle, it reclaims half The trapezoid, you see that if we start with the Halfway in between, because when you look at theĪrea difference between the two rectangles- and let Now, it looks like theĪrea of the trapezoid should be in between The area of a rectangle that has a width of 2Īnd a height of 3. We went with 2 times 3? Well, now we'd be finding Now, the trapezoid isĬlearly less than that, but let's just go with So it would give us thisĮntire area right over there. The area of a figure that looked like- let me do We multiply 6 times 3? Well, that would be the Multiplied this long base 6 times the height 3? So what do we get if Is, given the dimensions that they've given us, what And so this, byĭefinition, is a trapezoid. Where two of the sides are parallel to each other. Either way, you will get the same answer. You can intuitively visualise Steps 1-3 or you can even derive this expression by considering each Area portion and summing up the parts. Therefore, the area of the Trapezoid is equal to. In Area 3, the triangle area part of the Trapezoid is exactly one half of Area 3 Adding the 2 areas leads to double counting, so we take one half of the sum of smaller rectangle and Area 2ģ. In Area 2, the rectangle area part of the Trapezoid is equal to Area 2 as well as the area of the smaller rectangle. In Area 1, the triangle area part of the Trapezoid is exactly one half of Area 1Ģ. Let's call them Area 1, Area 2 and Area 3 from left to right. Think of it this way - split the larger rectangle into 3 parts as Sal has done in the video. So what Sal means by average in this particular video is that the area of the Trapezoid should be exactly half the area of the larger rectangle (6x3) and the smaller rectangle (2x3). Then the next morning I woke up to an email from Valve, saying something like "It’s customary to wait until the agreements are signed before announcing." So I’m thinking, fuck, I’ve announced it’s going to be on Steam and now I’ve pissed off Valve-so it’s not going to be on Steam. It took me a couple of weeks to recover from that. This was a big deal and blew up everywhere. So we decided to announce that we were going to be on Steam and everything was going to be okay. This wasn’t like announcing that you’re gonna be on Steam nowadays, this was when there were about 3 games on Steam. They had got used to weekly updates before that. We’d been working on it in secret for a few months and the community were getting quite worried. GN: I can’t remember much of it-it was actually one of the most embarrassing things that has ever happened to me. So I’m thinking, fuck, I've announced it’s going to be on Steam and now I've pissed off Valve. Was the negative reaction worse than you thought it might be, or not as bad? So then I had to get on my hands and knees and send an email to Valve where I explained that it wasn’t a dumb idea and can we do it please. Then it clicked that if we were going to sell the new version it could justify spending more time on it and justify people buying it rather than sticking with the free version. I couldn’t justify spending a decent amount of time doing this stuff. I was like, yeah right, what a dumb idea, it’s already free-why would anyone pay for it?Īs time went by and it kept getting more popular, I thought about things I’d like to reprogram, stuff I’d like to improve and innovate on. I was emailing to ask about something else and they mentioned that they think it’d sell well. GN: It was about a year before we started selling it. It’s been cool to see it happen over the past 15 years for Garry and his team. Reducing the friction between the creator of interesting content and the consumer of it has a number of really positive side effects. Garry being able starting at building a product that he thought people would like, to where he is today, is the kind of story we’re always trying to make happen. It was clear that it was a perfect example of a product that would benefit from this, and so we reached out and asked him if he was interested. Our philosophy back then was the same as it is today, which is that we wanted a platform that connected the people who created valuable content with the people that consumed it. When did the idea to start selling GMod on Steam come along? Was it Valve's idea or Garry's?ĮJ: It was the early days of getting Steam built, and it was pretty clear that Garry’s Mod had a big (and growing) audience. Paid mods are (still) a great source of ire among (some) players. It will be fun to watch what people build with the editor we’re releasing along with Half-Life: Alyx next year. Part of the process for us in shipping any of our games, but especially the single player ones, is letting go of them once they are released, and letting the community take bits and pieces of them in whatever direction they want to. What's it like to see the beloved characters from Half-Life and other Valve games being used with Garry's Mod for machinima and comics and videos?ĮJ: It’s pretty cool. Garry has always been about as good as it gets at picking the right direction to take his game. It’s a more difficult process than it sounds, because it really comes down to navigating a constant stream of feedback, but being limited in the amount of time to get everything done. We’ve always been impressed by Garry’s ability to iterate on the game and roll feedback from his community into the game so well. That said, it would have been pretty hard to predict the Garry’s Mod of 2019 back in 2004. So, on one hand, it wasn’t surprising that Garry started in a similar place that we did. Even in the early days of development, most of the experiments that people were running had the physics engine at its core. It felt like Garry’s Mod grew right out of that community after Half-Life 2 shipped.ĭid anyone at Valve have any idea the Source engine could be used the way it is in Garry's Mod? Are there any tools in GMod that surprised you to see?ĮJ: A lot of the identity of the gameplay of Half-Life 2 centered around physics. While having the code for Half-Life 2 out in the wild before the game was finished wasn’t a super positive experience for the team finishing the game, it's pretty cool to see what the mod community could get working with that unfinished codebase. I do remember there being a pretty significant, and somewhat underground, mod community that was working off of the Half-Life 2 source code leak from 2003. What's it like being a citizen under the oppressive thumb of the Combine on a Garry's Mod roleplaying server? We went undercover to find out.Įrik Johnson: The specific point in time is a little tricky to pin down. The backlit touchscreen keypad was responsive, but tapping the right spot to turn on the backlight took a few tries. While the Yale Assure Lock 2 has almost all the features we looked for in a smart lock, it doesn’t offer a fingerprint scanner, which some other smart locks do and we enjoyed using as an alternative. What we didn’t like about the Yale Assure Lock 2 We tried out a keyless model, but if you opt for a keyless lock you won’t need to worry about the battery running out - a set of prongs on the bottom lets you recharge the lock enough to get access using a 9V battery. You’ll also see a log of who came and went so you’ll know if the cat sitter showed up or if the kids got home from school. Unique, timed codes can be shared, making this an easy way to give guest access, great for a rental property. Smart Alerts can also be set to notify you when specific users have accessed the lock. A “Door Sense” feature can monitor when the door is open or closed and will auto lock after a set time (or alert you that it cannot). You can also set the Assure Lock 2 to auto unlock based on your phone’s location, so you don’t have to have anything in hand to open the door. The smart module attaches to the interior of the lock right above the battery and connects to our home Wi-Fi without any issues. We didn’t have as smooth an experience with some other locks, and setting up the Yale was much easier and faster. Installation was simple - you scan a QR code to open a tutorial that walks you through the setup process with detailed info and videos. We tested the keyless, touchscreen-equipped base unit, along with the Wi-Fi smart module. Z-Wave and Matter Smart models are slated to be available later this year (at $79 each), so you should be able to make the lock work with almost any smart home system. If you use the Wi-Fi module, then you can integrate with Amazon Alexa or Google Home and get full remote access using any of the big three smart home platforms. That way we knew what time the cats were last fed, so they couldn’t pretend they were starving when we got home. I used that for our cat sitter and set up a Smart Alert to notify us when she used the lock. Granting unique codes lets you see in the app’s history log just who came and went - no need to loan out extra keys or worry about getting them back. Through the Yale Access app, I added our son to our lock (he had to download and set up the app on his phone) and was able to grant him PIN access using a code. Using the Yale Access app, you can easily grant codes to anyone you need - we set up access for our family and our cat sitter right from our Apple Watch, but you can also use your phone and set up everything or control everything via the Apple Home app, even over Bluetooth. Yale’s system lets us provide permanent or temporary access using just geofencing, codes and remote control more easily than any other lock we tested. To be worth the money, a smart lock needs to make life simpler than a plain old lock and key, letting you manage access to your home for you, your family, your houseguests and whoever else you invite over, and the Yale Assure really delivers. What we liked about the Yale Assure Lock 2 It works well, it’s simple to install and it’s simple to upgrade to meet changing smart home standards. Building on the same core unit, you can choose between keypad or touchscreen and keyed and keyless models, and whatever flavor of smart home connectivity suits your setup. The Yale Assure Lock 2 is a full-featured replacement lock with a modular design that lets you buy exactly what you need to get the sort of access you want. Instead of building on separate foundation piles, like in Solitaire, you build descending sequences within the tableau. If, however, the sequence includes a 6 of Hearts, 5 of Spades, and 4 Hearts, you cannot move that sequence. For example, if you’re playing with Spades and Hearts and have a 6 of Hearts, 5 of Hearts, and a 4 Hearts, you can move that whole set on top of a 7 of Hearts or a 7 of Spades. If you want to move an entire sequence or column of cards, the sequence or column must be of the same suit, and you can place it on a card that is 1 rank higher but of either suit. Move columns of cards if they are the same suit. For example, if you’re playing with Clubs and Diamonds, a 6 of Clubs can be placed on top of a 7 of Clubs or a 7 of whatever the second suit is (Diamonds, Hearts, or Spades). To arrange individual cards, you just move them on top of a card that is 1 rank higher-even if it’s not the same suit. Move individual cards by rank, regardless of suit. When you deal from the stock pile, you will be dealt 1 face-up card on each column, overlapping the cards already present. You begin with only 10 face-up cards, but you can free face-down cards by removing a face-up card from on top of it. The only cards you can move are the face-up cards in the columns of the tableau. These rules help you understand how to play Spider Solitaire (2 Suits): The waste pile: Unlike Solitaire, you don’t use a waste pile because the stockpile cards are dealt directly onto columns in the tableau.Instead, you create the entire sequence in the tableau and then transfer it to a foundation pile when it is complete. Additionally, you don’t build on those spaces during the game. The Foundation piles: Like classic Solitaire, you leave room at the top for foundation piles, but you need 8 spaces instead of 4.If the stock pile runs out and you can’t make any more moves, you have lost the game. When you are stuck and can’t make any more moves, you deal 1 card face-up to each column from the stock pile until the stock pile runs out. The stock pile: The remaining 50 cards are placed at the top left of your space, face-down, for the stock pile. You’ll arrange cards in the tableau in descending order instead of building on active foundation piles. All cards are face-down except the last card of each column, which is face-up. You deal out 54 cards from left to right in 10 columns, with 6 cards in the first 4 columns and 5 cards in the last 6 columns. The tableau: Like any Solitaire game, the tableau is the main area for play.Using two decks of two different suits, you arrange your game space into three key parts: These sequences get transferred to the 8 separate foundation piles. ObjectiveĬlear all the cards by building sequences within the tableau, separated by suit and arranged in descending order from King (high) to Ace (low). Well-suited for intermediate players, Spider Solitaire (2 Suits) uses 104 cards-1 deck of Hearts and 1 deck of Spades. If you enjoy Spider Solitaire but want more of a challenge, you’re ready for Spider Solitaire (2 Suits). Summary: John goes off on a hunt without leaving word of when he'll be back.
